Company History
The Company was founded in 1969 by Tom Metcalfe and Brian Tattersall, both were fully trained Sawdoctors having served their apprenticeship working at the same well known saw doctoring and saw manufacturing company. At the end of 2000, after working in the industry for 50 years and having reached the age of 65, Tom Metcalfe decided to retire and leave the Company completely. Brian Tattersall took over and will continue to run the Company along similar lines as in the past.
The Company's first delivery van was a second hand Morris Minor, this served them well until the partners decided that it had given loyal service but had seen better days. It was then decided that a new vehicle was much needed. After the sterling service that the original van had given, a brand new Morris Minor was purchased at just over £500, that was a huge sum in those days!. Today there are three modern vans collecting and delivering on a weekly basis. The delivery areas covered are most parts of Lancashire and a proportion of Greater Manchester. A weekly collection and delivery service is available to our customers.
The premises have changed three times over the years, the Company first trading from Abbey Street in Accrington, after only a few months a more spacious workshop was found at Back Bridge Street, also in Accrington. It was here that some improvements were made to several of the machines and the manufacture and servicing of wide bandsaws was commenced. In 1976 the present factory was purchased, this was a big improvement on the previous workshops, giving far more room for the rapidly expanding business. The building now houses some of the most modern saw doctoring equipment available and this is added to as better machines become available.
The office and showroom have also seen several changes over the years, in the early days the offices were situated within the workshop. It was in 1988, that an adjacent shop premises became available, this was purchased to give greater office space and a far better display area for the many and varied types of Power Tools and light weight Woodworking Machinery that is stocked. Many customers referring it as an 'Aladdin's Cave'.
Since the start of 2001, there have been several staff changes. David Theaker an employee of over 35 years was made Works Manager, David is responceable for the smooth running of the Company. David Walsh is now Sales Manager attending to both telephone and counter sales. The accounts and all office work is now in the hands of Sylvia Crompton our Office Manager. All employees are very enthusiastic about the need for an efficient and smooth running Company, new ideas and practices have been put into operation, these should benefit both our Customers as well as ourselves. It is hoped that the Company will continue to hold a high proportion of the North West market, and will continue to prosper in the future as it has done in the past.
